Another good one from Patrick Weaver. What I wouldn't give to see him facing down this "church". And by church, I mean both the RP and PR denominations because YOU ARE BOTH THE SAME. Like identical twins but one decided to wear green pants instead of blue with their matching shirts.
"I tell you, I’m so sick of men, Christian leaders in particular, talking about marital forgiveness without context or clarification for those in abusive relationships.
It’s convenient rhetoric not biblical truth…the wife is the target in most of these covert messages about marital forgiveness. Forgiveness has nothing to do with the type of relationship it is, forgiveness has nothing to do with tolerance, and forgiveness is not a reward for unstoppable, destructive behavior. Haven’t you noticed that these same messages that espouse forgiveness to spouses without context and as a universal cure for relationship issues, never admonish the sinner, never rebuke the rebellious and never warn the wicked spouse of the biblical consequences of their unrepentant behavior? Have you ever seen rebuke included with these sappy messages about forgiveness as if God forgives without consequences. There’s hardly any mention of consequences for wicked and destructive treatment of a spouse. And what do you think the harm is to abuse victims if forgiveness is made to sound like something you do until the abuser gets tired of abusing you?
Church, it’s not covert anymore…we see very clearly that you’re a part of the problem when your marriage forgiveness messages promote martyrdom, perpetual tolerance of bad behavior, and mislead God’s people to believe that forgiveness means an offender is changed, repentant or safe. Biblical forgiveness comes with consequences. If one victim of domestic violence remains in an abusive, dangerous and wicked relationship because of your irresponsible teaching, their blood is on your hands: “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly” (James 3:1).
Happy Friday!!
