Does anyone know the story of how the PRC was kicked-out of Manhattan Montana for child abuse in the 1950's Perhaps someone else is aware of something I'm not but my understanding is that the Manhattan group left the CRC in the 40s because they didn't like their pastor (and openly said they would probably rejoin the CRC if the pastor changed). Then this group became affiliated with the PRC. They then left several years later (1954) when Rev De Wolf was ousted from the PRC. Then when De Wolf joined back up with the CRC, they joined back up too, becoming Bethel CRC. This is what I was able to find after googling. So it's possible that more unsavory history isn't public.

I never heard of Manhattan, Mt. until this post. Spending a little time on the town's and church's website I was surprised to find out there are two CRC churches in this very small community of 1,500 or so. Certainly a Dutch settlement of sorts. They even have a street called Wooden Shoe Lane. Reading further, a colony of Dutch farmers settled there in the 1800's, raising barley for the Bozeman, Mt. brewers and the Manhattan Malting Company. And, just to the south of Manhattan is Amsterdam, Mt. Interesting...

It's mostly about Amsterdam but there are some quotes of the PRC members and other mentions of Manhattan in there. I can't read the entire book to get a sense of if the author thinks this or if they are just reporting what people in the area think but some the quotations in it are kinda gross - there's this sense of looking down on other ethnicities and rejecting other cultures because only the Dutch culture is good. I suppose that sentiments along those same lines still run through the PRC today. books.google.com/books?id=-gDIEI96YxAC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_atb#v=onepage&q&f=false

I have heard from multiple Montana residents past and present that there was a "run-in" with a local sheriff back in the 40's-50's.
The church was under investigation from the local sheriff for beating some of the kids was what at least 4 Montana residents have told me.
Does the Gertrude Hoeksema book " A watered Garden" mention a "run-in" with a local sheriff as well ?
I know Rev. Hanko "the First" was a minister there too.
Did the case ever make it to the state or county courts ?

I very lightly skimmed through the middle section of "A Watered Garden" last night and didn't find anything about Manhattan in there other than that they left in the split. I think I started with p129 which was called something like winds of change or maybe that was the second chapter of the section? and stopped at the chapter where they were describing the sixties. Like I said I pretty lightly skimmed it but I didn't see anything and that definitely covered the full date range.

Has anyone read " Less Than The Least" by Cornelius Hanko ?
Chapter 19, Manhattan Montana Pgs. 161 -171 is about Manhattan Montana.
The reason I am bringining this up is because when I went to Hope College there were 2 people there from Manhattan Montana. One of them said that their grandfather knew the sheriff & that the sheriff did not want to let the church beat the children.
3 other people from Montana have confirmed this story...

What did it take to be accused of child abuse in the 40s and 50s?? I can guarantee it’s a lot more than today. Brings back memories all of the PR sermons about beating your children. I remember a sermon by Hanko where he said spare the child means you hate the child. Deep huh?

According to the Department of Human Services here in Michigan, using an object to strike your child is against the law. I wonder how many "good" Michigan pr parents have dishonored God's appointed civil authorities by using the object of a "rod" on their children, thereby also breaking the law in addition to their disrespect. If I see one do it, however, I'm calling CPS and maybe their "staff" will comfort you.

Growing up, I witnessed first hand a minister beating his children beyond belief. It was witnessed multiple times. Then we were taught that this is how to raise children. What a disgrace. This cult has been nothing but bad advice. It took too long to get out of it. I wish kids could understand what they are getting into when they think about folding to the pressure on them to join.
