The PRCA would love to be Amish just for the outfits. But does anybody see the pattern here? I just watched the trailer - it's the same thing, different group of crazy.

www.mgm.com/titles/women-talking/synopsis/Have you seen the film "Women Talking"? The entire movie is the women of an Amish sect discussing whether to 1)Do nothing 2)Stay & fight or 3)Leave. So many similarities between the movie and this forum. There are heroes in that movie just as there are so many heroes here!

The PRCA would love to be Amish just for the outfits. But does anybody see the pattern here? I just watched the trailer - it's the same thing, different group of crazy. Its worth looking at some of the parts of the pattern. They are dependent on each other, but they all make an environment where abuse and control dominate.
To me the big one is isolation. Outside the group is death and Satan. Inside the group is safety and salvation. Also that inside everything is taken care of. You don't need to worry about things because we'll tell you what's what, what to do. Outside there's just nobody to do that for you. The stricter the code of beliefs and practices the safer everybody is supposed to be. Freedom is slavery. Slavery is freedom.
Another big one is total reliance on the "chosen" experts to manage the group and its environment. There's always a claim to be responsible to an objective standard like the Bible. There's always a claim that the experts can be wrong and there's a way to appeal what they way. But there's also a claim that these experts have a divine authority which makes that way to appeal impossible. Those who ask questions of the experts and their way are isolated and ultimately thrown out as troublemakers. Blind obedience is praised as a virtue.
The point is abuse. All these systems pretend to be a utopia but never are. The experts say it. Most of the members recite it. But the opposite is true and it is the point. The leaders are gratified only with their control and the exercise of that control in abuse. Control and abuse are not bugs that can be chased out. They are necessary features maintained by those in power. The 3PI in the PRC is doomed to failure because the leaders don't want it. To them its interference with their program. Dykstra and company don't misunderstand. They know. They also know that they will succeed in keeping their power. They know they have enough people who want things to continue as they are.
This is a pattern. Its the pattern of the Roman Catholic Church. Its the pattern of the SBC. Its the pattern of the Amish. Its the pattern of the PRC and RPC. What's truly disturbing about this pattern is that its not learned. Lord of the Flies. In the PRC and RPC it means the dominance of corruption and the absence of the government of the Word of God.
Only one thing to do. Leave.

So many similarities between the movie and this forum. There are heroes in that movie just as there are so many heroes here! I have seen it, and agree, it was so powerful. And the angst and fear among the women. They all wanted the abuse to stop but didn’t know the best way.

I’ve been watching a podcast on YouTube callers cultstoconsciousness. Recently she interviewed one of the women involved in the documentary. I found that super interesting
