Maybe not a thread that you want, feel free to delete, but I have been popping back on often today just so I can see "Ham Bun" complete with pic. I literally cannot think of any food that would better represent the PRC/RPC ...unless it's wormwood! To whoever you are, THANK YOU for all the laughs you have given me today! OR....everyone name a food that could represent this "church"

I don’t think it’s possible to top “ham bun”… but since it’s always fun to reminisce about the kinds of Midwest potluck foods we grew up with, here’s some more dishes…
- Jello salad - 7-layer salad (with plenty of Mayo and sugar!) - tater tot casserole - any casserole, really - recipes containing cans of cream of chicken or celery or mushroom or whatever…

Funeral potatoes....aka cheezy hash brown casserole... that was always fun. Ham bun and 8 difference cheesey potato options on your plate. So many people would bring those so you waded through all the options... diced, shredded, sliced. Sometimes it was an oil covered mess. Sometimes the potatoes still had some crisp to them because partly raw is still edible. Some had lots of things hidden in them that I didn't like. Lol. Some with a topping. Some bare of topping... like being a pious potato dish was somehow holier. Can't have too much flare on your casserole ladies. Looking back, cooking skills weren't often strong. Lol. Hence the endless casserole options. Just dump, stir, and go... not to mention just add lots of cream of something soup and rice and you could stretch that recipe to feed the masses!
And then the dreaded elementary school hot lunch... Boiled generic hotdogs Runny BBQ with chunks of onion Bags of chips (cheetos always went fast) Ice cream sundae cups with wooden paddles to eat them Never, ever different. No surprise kids. Excitement must be tamped down. Can't have your taste buds in an excited tizzy... it could lead to pregnancy. So many foods associated with church and school. Oh, Mogan David in the lords supper shot glasses. I can smell it to this day. I always was envious that the preacher got to pour his. He always had more than we did!

I guess I don’t need to ask if there were much fresh fruit, vegetables, or green salads at these meals? ( Not slathered in Kool-whip, I mean).

We don't branch out to include foreign things. Fresh?? That's treading dangerously close to tantalizing the taste buds. Every Dutch church lady is staring daggers at you now! You and your worldly food ways. Whipped topping and cream of something soup is approved church food and we've always done it this way. Don't be stirring the pot...

What about the sherbet punch with ginger ale. So foamy on top.

Ugh, forgot about all the dang casseroles. Haven't even seen a casserole since I've left, thank god, let alone been guilted into eating one. Seemed like there was definitely some kind of casserole obsession there. Reason 1,003 why I left.

When I was in the CRC (somewhat PRC-adjacent) the pastor's wife served an hors d'oeuvre that consisted of layers of cheese and Spam, sandwiched between Ritz crackers. Is that a cultural food? Or maybe it was just her own personal recipe/experiment.

Is it sad that I always got excited for BBQ hot lunch day as a kid? lol And also, the clamor to get the orange pushups from the freezer before they ran out! (Popular kids went to the front usually. Ugh. Memories)

Seemed like there was definitely some kind of casserole obsession there. Reason 1,003 why I left. It may have to do with the fact that casseroles are really easy, and being a housewife making 3 square meals a day probably gets really boring, so you come up with casseroles which can sit in the oven while you secretly watch your TV programs all afternoon until your hellion children need to be picked up from cult school.

I remember the ice cream cups with the wooden paddles to eat and with "chocolate" on the ice cream. Actually not that bad. The only hot lunch I didn't get was the "tacos". The best was probably the pizza from Peppino's.
