Anyone else watching 'Shiny Happy People' on Amazon Prime about the Duggar Family/IBLP/Bill Gothard?
Bill Gothard was never married or had children and yet he was the authority on family life. Please question those who claim authority. Bill Gothard simply gained authority by saying he had the authority.

Please question those who claim authority. Bill Gothard simply gained authority by saying he had the authority. His teachings are influential in wider evangelical circles, including the PRC. Eve Ettinger, one of the hosts of the kitchen table cult podcast, is featured in Shiny Happy People. That podcast comes up quite a lot in ex-pr world when looking for podcast recommendations.

I came to see if there was a thread on this yet. I haven’t finished it yet but it feels chillingly familiar

Prnolonger the comparison to the PRC culture are similar. Historically has the PRC identified with those teachings being IBLP?

Holy shit. This documentary...
Thank you for promoting this series. It's been helpful and validating.
It's been helpful because I'm drawing connections between the PRCs stance on certain topics (authority, discipline to name two) and what had been being promoted in the broader radical Christian community throughout the past decades.
I also found it interesting how Gothard's view of authority and what Josh Engelsma wrote in the Standard Bearer an issue or two back are eeriely similar.
Gothard is a slimy manipulator. He created a way to spread fear through authority by isolation, misdirection, and physical abuse.
Isolation through homeschooling and only using IBLP approved material (wouldn't want the devil to accidentally poke through your umbrella!).
Misdirection by making the individual feel the heat of hell fire for any misdeed in order to distract them from the abusive culture.
Physical abuse (even to infants!) to keep the wife and children in line and silently submissive.
If this doesn't sound familiar (even to the smallest degree) to any current or ex PR then your head's still in the sand.
And all this is not even to mention the cover up for sexual abusers and predators, slut shaming women, and blaming the victim for the abuse.
There has got to be a way to shut IBLP, the PRC, the RPC, etc down. This shit is insane.
Also, props to the producers and directors of this documentary. The clip of the old guy spanking the young boy onstage... There's so much going on: butt patting, leaving his hand on the child's butt, asking for a hug, saying the hug wasn't good enough so he "spanks" him on the butt again, making the kid hug him a second time, then finally leaning back on the second hug so the kid rests against his junk. The producers and directors left so much unsaid in some of the scenes which shout volumes.

Please question those who claim authority. Bill Gothard simply gained authority by saying he had the authority. This is a MUST WATCH for those associated with the PRCA. The connections, the abuse, the biblical "responsibilities" of Matthew 18, the narcissistic trends of leadership are way too familiar. One quote (with probably more to come): "If you're perceived as 'useful', people will cover up for you. When Bill Gothard had that happened, they took the teachings, and ran with it in other directions"Now substitute Bill's name with Rev. Van Overloop, and this is the current standing of the PRCA. There's no apology to victims. No real attention to abuse, but simply the head nods at the main gatherings (classis/synods). The entire PRCA is a narcissistic program setup for abuse, horrifically illustrated with this series. Again, this is a MUST WATCH.

That little voice in the back of your head that says "This is wrong", that's right. Don't lose that.

It turns out as much as they tried to control us, we were ultimately what they most feared, and had this power the entire time, and all we had to do was talk.

The IBLP (Fundamentalists) spread through the Southern Baptist churches. Rev. Van Overloop worked as a missionary in the deep south in Birmingham, AL from 1979 to 1984. Quote from the documentary- "They (IBLP) turned every father into a cult leader and franchised spiritual, physical, emotional, psychological abuse. It's patriarchal, it's authoritarian. Women don't have rights, children break. Instant obedience." This documentary is a MUST WATCH! Fully agree that the connections are familiar and seriously think the PRC must have picked up IBLP teachings and rewrapped them as their own. Same teachings I grew up with.
